 The history of chess goes back almost 1500 years. The game originated in northern India in the 6th century AD and spread to Persia. 

In Europe, the moves of the pieces changed in the 15th century. The modern game starts with these changes. In the second half of the 19th century, modern tournament play began.

Chess clocks were first used in 1883, and the first world chess championship was held in 1886. The 20th century saw advances in chess theory, and the establishment of the World Chess Federation (FIDE). Chess engines (programs that play chess), and chess data bases became important.

8th century

Chess was invented in India around the 8th century. Then it was known as chatrang, and changed over the centuries by the Arabs, Persians and then ultimately the medieval Europeans, who changed the pieces' names and appearances to resemble the English court

शतरंज का इतिहास लगभग 1500 साल पुराना है। यह खेल छठी शताब्दी ईस्वी में उत्तरी भारत में उत्पन्न हुआ और फारस में फैल गया।

यूरोप में, १५वीं शताब्दी में टुकड़ों की चाल बदल गई। आधुनिक खेल की शुरुआत इन्हीं परिवर्तनों से होती है। 19वीं सदी के उत्तरार्ध में, आधुनिक टूर्नामेंट खेल शुरू हुआ।

शतरंज की घड़ियों का पहली बार इस्तेमाल १८८३ में किया गया था, और पहली विश्व शतरंज चैंपियनशिप १८८६ में आयोजित की गई थी। २०वीं सदी में शतरंज के सिद्धांत में प्रगति देखी गई, और विश्व शतरंज संघ (एफआईडीई) की स्थापना हुई। शतरंज के इंजन (शतरंज खेलने वाले कार्यक्रम), और शतरंज के डेटाबेस महत्वपूर्ण हो गए।

शतरंज का आविष्कार भारत में आठवीं शताब्दी के आसपास हुआ था। तब इसे चतरंग के रूप में जाना जाता था, और सदियों से अरबों, फारसियों और फिर अंततः मध्ययुगीन यूरोपीय लोगों द्वारा बदल दिया गया, जिन्होंने अंग्रेजी दरबार के समान टुकड़ों के नाम और उपस्थिति को बदल दिया।
